The city of courage ~ Baku

Dreams can come true, if you have the courage to pursue them ~

Courage, I have been hearing this word repeatedly the past weeks. Yes, I am courageous and yes, I am brave, I listen to the wind and I will continue to be fearless in the pursuit of what sets my soul on fire. This reminds me of an interesting city located at the joint of Europe and Asia, and yes, I have been to Baku.

The Port City of Baku, “City of Winds” is the capital of the “Land of Fire”, Azerbaijan. Baku is also the largest cultural center of Azerbaijan and it housed many beautiful buildings with strong cultural content.

My first visit to Baku was in 2013, en-route to our hotel, I simply can’t take my eyes off this huge fluid shaped building, the Heydar Aliyev Center. The center takes its name from the national leader of Azerbaijan who led the country between 1969 and 1987.

Creativity requires courage…

The Heyday Aliyev Center is an important cultural center designed by Iraqi-British architect Zaha Hadid, hosting cultural events, promoting Azerbaijan history and culture and houses many international exhibitions, concerts, festivals and events. I’ve visited this center not once but twice (2nd trip in 2015) and why I fell in love with this impressive architecture…

Architect Zaha Hadid described this project as “incredibly ambitious project”

  • Innovative, creative and unique
  • Represents ambition and optimism
  • Modern thinking vs traditional Azeri culture
  • Design of the Year in 2014
  • A complex structure yet cutting-edge

Zaha Hadid, described as the “Queen of the curve” who died in 2016, following a sudden heart attack has inspired many people. She will always be regarded as the greatest female architect in the world. I hope I will be able to see as many possible, her incredible works…around the world.

The other contemporary architecture in Baku that one should visit ~ Flame Towers, the trio of skyscrapers with curved and triangular design that resembles three flickering flames. The magical view begins after dark when the towers light up, alternate between the colours of Azerbaijan flag and the color of fire.

Courage is… a decision ~
